When you upload a site on Historvius, you can pinpoint its exact location on our global map, allowing other members of the history community to see exactly where it is. To do this, you need to input its coordinates. Here’s a quick guide to finding them:
Open a new browser window and navigate to Google Maps. Type in your site’s name or its address or postcode and click on ‘search’.
At this point, you should be presented with a map pinpointing your site. There might be a number of options shown as to where it may be (depending on how much information you provided), but hopefully you should be able to find it be using the satellite view to locate it or by its address.
Once you know where your site is, right-click your mouse over it to be presented with a small menu of options. Select the “what’s here?” button. At this point, you’ll see the site’s coordinates near the top of the page (next to where the Google Maps logo is). For example, the Acropolis coordinates are 37.97154,23.726551. The number before the comma is the latitude and the number after the comma is the longitude.
4. Entering a site’s location on Historvius
When you upload your site, the mapping feature is the first of the optional information tabs. Once you’ve entered the initial information about the site (including the country in which it is located), open the 'add location information' tab by clicking on it. Enter the town or city in which the site is located or the nearest one. Some default coordinates will appear. Replace these coordinates with the coordinates of your site, putting the latitude in the latitude box and the longitude in the longitude box.
Click on the "preview" button to see the location of the pin and zoom in to check that it's in the right place. You can move your pin by clicking on the map. And that's it!
