Today’s intrepid Time Traveller is Brad Girtz, Editor of the travel technology magazine Travolution. We find out about his most interesting travel experiences, his tips for making the most of your budget and his uncomfortable run-in with the Romans…
Q: What’s your favourite historic site in the world and why?
A: The roman gardens in Chester, England are my favourite historical site. They are small but beautiful and provide a great window into Roman life in England.

Q: If you could go anywhere on the planet tomorrow where would it be?
A: The Incan ruins at Macchu Pichu. The fact that an ancient civilization could survive tucked into the side of a mountain is just amazing.
Q: What’s the most interesting city break you’ve been on?
A: My three days in Bangkok were the most interesting. I loved the markets but my favourite part was trying the fruit and other food sold by vendors on the streets.

Q: What’s the most eye-opening ‘hidden historic site’ you’ve visited?
A: The most eye opening site I have ever been to was a native American village in the pacific northwest. I was struck by how the people that had lived there used everything they could grow or catch and wasted nothing.
Q: If you could meet one person from history who would it be?
A: Theodore Roosevelt. He was a childhood hero of mine because of his work creating national parks and pioneering spirit.
Q: What tips would you give for someone seeking sites on a budget?
A: Eat where the locals eat. The best food is often the cheapest.
Q: Beachside reading: historical fiction or historic fact?
A: Historical fact
Q: What’s your favourite period of history?
A: I suppose the wild west was the most interesting period for me.
Q: Have you ever dressed up as a Roman?
A: No, but I have been carried through the streets by someone who was.
Q: And finally…Eleanor Roosevelt / Queen Victoria / Eva Perón: Kiss, Marry, Kill?
A: Kiss Eva, Marry Eleanor and Kill Victoria (not that I have anything against her.)
