There are a number of surviving Roman Sites in Scotland with several containing a range of ancient ruins which can still be explored. However, it must be stated that – due to the short occupation of the area by the Romans, the Roman remains in Scotland are not amongst the best preserved.

One of the most famous of the Scottish Roman ruins is the Antonine Wall. Built around 140AD by the Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius, who had sent his forces into Scotland to secure the region against the tribes of the North, the wall was meant to be a barrier to secure the peace of the Roman province. The lifespan of the Antonine Wall was however extremely short, being abandoned after just twenty years. As happened often during the Empire, the Romans reverted to a policy of using client-kingdoms as buffer states rather than having to permanently occupy the border.
